Automotive & MechanicsParallel parking between two standards

On the Georgia road test you park midway between two standards, no more than 18 inches from the curb, in a space 22 feet long and 10 feet deep. The Drivers Manual gives the steps one by one: line up with the car ahead, back in at an angle, straighten, and pull to the center of the space. It is the parallel parking of the Georgia DDS road test.

Scenarios

  • The road test space: 22 feet long and 10 feet deep, between two standards.
  • A space on the street between two parked cars.

The steps

  1. Signal before you begin the maneuver.
  2. Drive past the space and stop about even with the car ahead of it, about 2 feet away, door to door.
  3. Before backing, check all sides of the car, then turn your head and look over your right shoulder; do not depend on the mirrors.
  4. Turn the wheels sharply to the right and back slowly toward the car behind the space.
  5. As your front door passes the back bumper of the car ahead, quickly straighten the wheels and keep backing at an angle in a straight line.
  6. When your front bumper is clear of the car ahead, turn the wheels sharply to the left and back slowly toward the car behind.
  7. Stop before you touch the car behind.
  8. Shift into drive, turn the wheels sharply to the right and pull toward the center of the space.
  9. End midway between the two standards, no more than 18 inches from the curb.
  10. Signal again when you pull out of the space.

Safety rules that stop the station

  • You may take the test in a car with driver assistance technology, but you must show you can drive it without that technology.

To pass

  • The traditional road test is scored as a whole: you need at least 75%, and at the end the examiner shows you the score sheet and discusses the results with you.
  • If you fail, wait until the next day to take it again; after a second failure, wait 7 days.
