Automotive & MechanicsPulling over for an emergency vehicle

When an emergency vehicle comes with its lights and siren on, you slow down, pull to the right and stop without blocking its way. When it is stopped on the roadside with its lights flashing, Georgia's Move Over law tells you to change lanes or slow down. It is the emergency vehicle rules of the Georgia DDS Drivers Manual.

Scenarios

  • An emergency vehicle with blue or red lights and siren coming up behind you.
  • A police car, ambulance or tow truck stopped on the roadside with its lights flashing.
  • A fire apparatus answering an alarm.

The steps

  1. Lights (blue or red) and siren: safely move your car out of its way.
  2. Slow down and move over to the shoulder, or as far right in the road or lane as you can, and stop.
  3. Do it without putting other drivers, bicyclists or pedestrians at risk.
  4. Do not stop where you block an intersection or keep the emergency vehicle from making a turn.
  5. Do not follow a fire apparatus answering an alarm, or another emergency vehicle, closer than 200 feet.
  6. Do not park within 500 feet of a fire apparatus stopped at an alarm.
  7. Move Over: for an emergency vehicle stopped on the roadside with flashing yellow, amber, white, red or blue lights, move to the next lane if you safely can.
  8. If you cannot move over, slow down below the speed limit and be prepared to stop.
  9. Do the same for active sanitation and utility workers using traffic cones or flashing lights.
  10. Obey the traffic directions of a law enforcement officer or firefighter, even when they go against the lights and signs.

Safety rules that stop the station

  • Yield to every highway maintenance vehicle and worker in a construction zone.

To pass

  • Disobeying a traffic-control device or a traffic officer is a 3-point violation in Georgia.
  • The traditional road test is scored as a whole: you need at least 75%, and at the end the examiner shows you the score sheet and discusses the results with you.
  • If you fail, wait until the next day to take it again; after a second failure, wait 7 days.
