Automotive & MechanicsTurning about in a narrow space

On the Georgia road test the examiner asks you to turn the car around in a narrow space with a three-point turn. The Drivers Manual adds where you may turn around and how to look back every time you reverse. It is the turnabout of the Georgia DDS road test.

Scenarios

  • A narrow street during the Class C road test.
  • A car with a manual transmission.

The steps

  1. Turn around only where drivers coming from either direction can see you: never on a curve or near the top of a hill.
  2. Do not turn around where signs prohibit it.
  3. Turn the car around in the narrow space with a three-point turn.
  4. Every time you back, first check all sides of the car.
  5. While backing, turn your head and look over your right shoulder; do not depend on the mirrors.
  6. With a manual transmission, shift smoothly and correctly.

Safety rules that stop the station

  • Backing up is prohibited on controlled-access roadways.

To pass

  • The traditional road test is scored as a whole: you need at least 75%, and at the end the examiner shows you the score sheet and discusses the results with you.
  • If you fail, wait until the next day to take it again; after a second failure, wait 7 days.
