Automotive & MechanicsYielding to pedestrians and bicyclists

A traffic check is seeing vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians and reacting to them, and the examiner watches it in every action of the test. Yielding the right-of-way when safety requires it is scored in the parking lot, at every intersection and in every turn. Making a pedestrian or another driver take evasive action is a critical driving error. It is the right-of-way of the California DMV Class C driving test.

Scenarios

  • Pedestrians and bicyclists in the parking lot at the start of the test.
  • A crosswalk at an intersection or a corner where you turn.
  • An intersection with no signs or signals.
  • A right turn with a bike lane.

The steps

  1. In the parking lot, watch ahead, behind, to the left and to the right for vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians.
  2. Turn your head and look toward drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians when needed.
  3. Yield the right-of-way to vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians when safety requires it.
  4. At an intersection with no signs or signals, move your head and eyes to check traffic when a hazard is present. Critical point
  5. Never make a pedestrian or another driver take evasive action. Critical point
  6. Never hit a vehicle, object, bicyclist, pedestrian or animal you could safely have avoided. Critical point
  7. Never drive over the curb or onto the sidewalk. Critical point
  8. On a right turn with a bike lane, enter the bike lane only after making sure no bicycle is coming, then turn.
  9. Take your right-of-way when it is safe, without causing confusion or blocking traffic.
  10. Obey every safety officer, law enforcement officer and firefighter. Critical point

To pass

  • Each item here that you miss is marked as an error on the scoring maneuvers; you pass with no more than 15 of them.
  • A step marked critical is a critical driving error: a single one fails the test.
