AviationBefore takeoff check
At the runway, you review the takeoff performance, run the before takeoff checklist with the airplane well positioned, and confirm the engine and the configuration are ready. It is Task F of Area II, Preflight Procedures, in the FAA Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards, the checkride every private pilot flies.
Free to startThe steps
- Review the takeoff performance.
- Complete the appropriate checklists.
- Position the airplane for the wind direction and clear of other aircraft, vessels or buildings, as applicable.
- Divide your attention inside and outside the flight deck.
- Verify that the engine parameters and the airplane configuration are suitable.
Safety rules that stop the station
- Any action, or lack of action, that makes the examiner step in to keep the flight safe is unsatisfactory.
- If you do not use sound aeronautical decision-making, including single-pilot resource management, the examiner marks the task as failed.
To pass
- Takeoff performance reviewed, the checklist done with the airplane well positioned, and the engine and configuration confirmed.
- Know the purpose of each before takeoff check item, how to detect malfunctions and make sure the airplane is in safe operating condition as the manufacturer recommends, and the risks of divided attention, an unexpected runway change, wake turbulence and a possible engine failure on takeoff.
- Missing the standard on this task fails the task and its area of operation.
