Which Area IX tasks apply to single-engine airplanes?
A Emergency Descent, B Emergency Approach and Landing, C Systems and Equipment Malfunctions, D Emergency Equipment and Survival Gear; E to G are multiengine.
Which situations call for an emergency descent (IX.A.K1)?
For example depressurization, smoke or an engine fire.
What bank angle does IX.A.S4 require, and why?
Between 30 and 45 degrees, to keep positive load factors in the descent.
What are the tolerances in IX.A.S5?
Airspeed +0/-10 knots, and level off at the assigned altitude within plus or minus 100 feet.
Which skill opens the emergency descent task?
Clear the area.
Which radio and crew skills close task IX.A?
Make radio calls as appropriate and use single-pilot or crew resource management (SRM or CRM).
What does IX.C.K1 cover?
Causes of partial or complete power loss for the specific type of engine.
Which malfunctions does IX.C.K2 list?
Electrical, vacuum or pressure instruments, pitot-static, electronic displays, landing gear or flaps, and inoperative trim.
What else must the applicant know in task IX.C?
Causes and remedies for smoke or fire, other systems such as oxygen or deicing, and a door or window opening in flight.
Which IX.C risks deal with surprise and upset?
Undesired aircraft state (R3) and startle response (R4).
How many simulated emergencies does skill IX.C.S1 draw on?
At least three elements or sub-elements from K1 to K5, chosen by the evaluator.
What must the applicant know about the ELT (IX.D.K1)?
Its operation, limitations and testing requirements.
Which environments does IX.D.K3 name for survival gear?
Hot or cold climate extremes, mountainous terrain and overwater flights.
For how long should survival gear last (IX.D.R1)?
Water, clothing and shelter for 48 to 72 hours.
Which modern safety systems appear in IX.D?
When to deploy a ballistic parachute and when to activate an emergency auto-land system, with passenger briefings.
Is a ballistic parachute fired on the checkride?
No: the applicant arms and disarms it per the manufacturer; testing may use simulation and briefing only.
What briefing skill does IX.D.S2 require?
Brief passengers on using the on-board emergency equipment and survival gear.
What if an emergency procedure would put the flight at risk on the test?
The evaluator asks the applicant to simulate that part.
How are checklists judged when reading one is unsafe?
The evaluator checks the memory items, then the checklist review once conditions allow.
On a multiengine test, how low may an engine failure after liftoff be simulated?
Not below 400 feet AGL, and not before reaching at least VSSE, VXSE or VYSE.
