AviationRough water takeoff and climb

In a seaplane, on waves and swells, you pick the takeoff path for the wind and the swells, keep the planing attitude, lift off at the minimum speed and reach VY before leaving ground effect. It is Task K of Area IV, Takeoffs, Landings, and Go-Arounds, in the FAA Private Pilot Airman Certification Standards, for the airplane classes listed below.

Scenarios

  • Airplane single-engine sea (ASES).
  • Airplane multiengine sea (AMES).

The steps

  1. Complete the appropriate checklists.
  2. Make radio calls as appropriate.
  3. Verify the assigned or correct takeoff path.
  4. Determine the wind direction, with or without visible wind indicators.
  5. Position the flight controls and configure the airplane for the existing conditions.
  6. Clear the area and select a takeoff path for the wind, swells, surface hazards and vessels.
  7. Retract the water rudders, as appropriate.
  8. Advance the throttle smoothly to takeoff power and confirm the engine and flight instrument indications before rotation.
  9. Hold an appropriate planing attitude and directional control, and correct for porpoising, skipping and the increase in water drag.
  10. Avoid excessive water spray on the propeller.
  11. Lift off at the minimum airspeed and accelerate to VY +10/-5 knots before leaving ground effect.
  12. Configure the airplane after a positive rate of climb is verified, or as the manufacturer says.
  13. Hold VY +10/-5 knots to a safe maneuvering altitude.
  14. Keep directional control and the right wind-drift correction through the takeoff and climb.

Safety rules that stop the station

  • If there is no rough water that day, the examiner has you simulate the task.
  • Any action, or lack of action, that makes the examiner step in to keep the flight safe is unsatisfactory.
  • Not clearing the area with a proper visual scan before and during the maneuver is unsatisfactory.
  • Consistently exceeding the tolerances of the task, or not correcting promptly when you exceed them, is unsatisfactory.

To pass

  • A takeoff path chosen for wind and swells, lift-off at the minimum speed, VY +10/-5 knots before leaving ground effect and to a safe altitude.
  • Know how the atmosphere and the wind change takeoff and climb performance, VX and VY, the right configuration, the rough water takeoff technique, and the risks of the takeoff path, crosswind, windshear, tailwind, wake turbulence, the water surface, a rejected takeoff, an engine failure in the climb, collision, low-altitude stalls and spins, distractions and the gear position in an amphibian.
  • Missing the standard on this task fails the task and its area of operation.
