ConstructionLanding the beam with only the landing crew

The last meters are where the most people want to be under the beam. The rule lets in only the workers needed to receive it, and sets how it comes down when someone is under it. You bring it in, land it, and free the rigging only once it rests.

Scenarios

  • Landing the beam on its supports.
  • Making the first connection of the beam to the structure.
  • A tilt-up or tilt-down operation.

The steps

  1. As the beam is landed, only the workers needed to receive it stay in the fall zone.
  2. The beam they receive is rigged by a qualified rigger so it cannot shift, with self-closing latch hooks.
  3. If anyone is directly under the load, lower it with controlled load lowering: no free fall of the load line.
  4. Bring it down with the lower signal and the move slowly signal as it nears its supports.
  5. The operator stays at the controls while the beam hangs.
  6. For the first connection to the structure, the workers making it may be in the fall zone, with the load rigged as for hooking and guiding.
  7. In a tilt-up or tilt-down, no one is directly under the load, and only workers essential to the operation are in the fall zone.
  8. Once the beam rests, never pull a sling from under it, and move the rigging that is not in use out of the work area.

Safety rules that stop the station

  • Only the workers needed to receive the load are in the fall zone while it is landed.
  • Load line free fall is prohibited when anyone is directly under the load.

To pass

  • Nobody in the fall zone but the landing crew.
  • Controlled load lowering whenever anyone is under the beam.
  • The beam resting before any sling is freed.
