What classes of rubber insulating equipment does OSHA list?
Class 00, 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4, and each item must be marked with its class.
What is the maximum use voltage of Class 00 rubber insulating equipment?
500 volts ac rms.
What is the maximum use voltage of Class 0 equipment?
1,000 volts ac rms.
What is the maximum use voltage of Class 4, the highest class?
36,000 volts ac rms.
When must rubber insulating gloves be inspected?
Before each day's use and right after any incident that may have damaged them, with an air test.
Which defects take rubber insulating equipment out of use?
A hole, tear, puncture or cut; ozone cracking; an embedded object; or rubber that swells, softens, hardens or turns sticky.
How often must rubber insulating gloves be electrically tested?
Before first issue and every 6 months after that.
How often must rubber insulating sleeves and blankets be electrically tested?
Before first issue and every 12 months after that.
What is worn over rubber insulating gloves?
Protector gloves, except in a few limited-use cases that need high finger dexterity.
Can insulating gloves used without protector gloves go straight back into service?
No. They may not be reused until they have been tested.
If a worker uses rubber insulating gloves as insulation, what else is normally required?
Rubber insulating sleeves, unless nearby energized parts are covered and the cover was installed from a safe position.
Within reach of energized parts, what conductive articles must a worker remove or make nonconductive?
Keychains, watch chains, rings, wrist watches or bands, unless they do not add to the hazard.
What two arc-flash steps must the employer take first?
Assess the workplace to find workers exposed to flames or arcs, and make a reasonable estimate of their incident heat energy.
Which fabrics are banned for workers exposed to flames or arcs, unless treated or worn safely?
Acetate, nylon, polyester, rayon and polypropylene, alone or in blends.
Above what estimated incident energy must arc-rated protection cover the whole body?
Above 2.0 cal/cm2, with an arc rating equal to or greater than the estimate.
When are arc-rated gloves not needed on the hands?
With rubber insulating gloves and protectors, or up to 14 cal/cm2 with heavy-duty leather gloves of at least 407 gm/m2 (12 oz/yd2).
Which document heads OSHA's list of methods to estimate arc heat energy?
NFPA 70E-2012, Annex D; OSHA lists several methods and endorses none of them.
What must be done with each live-line tool before use each day?
Wipe it clean and visually inspect it for defects.
How often must live-line tools used for primary protection come out of service for examination and testing?
Every 2 years, and whenever a defect or contamination is found.
Since April 1, 2015, how far may a worker free fall in a work-positioning system?
No more than 0.6 meters (2 feet).
