ElectricityTwo first-aid trained on the crew

When the crew works on, or in connection with, exposed lines or equipment energized at 50 volts or more, people trained in first aid must be available: at least two for field work with two or more employees, and at fixed locations such as substations enough to reach each exposed employee within 4 minutes. It is 29 CFR 1910.269(b)(1).

Scenarios

  • A field crew of two or more line workers on lines energized at 50 volts or more.
  • A substation or other fixed work location.
  • A remote substation with too few employees to reach everyone within 4 minutes.

The steps

  1. Check whether the work is on, or associated with, exposed lines or equipment energized at 50 volts or more.
  2. For field work with two or more employees at the work location, make sure at least two persons trained in first aid and CPR are available.
  3. At a fixed work location such as a substation, have enough trained persons to reach each employee exposed to electric shock within 4 minutes.
  4. At a remote substation where there are not enough employees for that, make sure every employee at the work location is trained.
  5. Keep every exposed employee no more than 4 minutes from a person trained in first aid and CPR.

To pass

  • Field crews: at least two trained persons are available.
  • Fixed work locations: a trained person can reach each exposed employee within 4 minutes.
  • For line-clearance tree trimmers who are not qualified employees, one trained person is enough if every new employee is trained in first aid within 3 months of hire.
