Basement fire down the stairs
Firefighter I · Who you talk to: Two team members
A fire below grade, reached only by the interior stairs, with heat rising up the stairwell.
What this case adds
- Leave extra hose near the stairwell entrance.
- Ventilate or call for ventilation above the fire if possible.
- Go down feet first, checking each step, quickly, behind a wide-angle fog pattern.
- Search for and extinguish the fire at the bottom.
Critical fails
- Entering without SCBA on air, or letting your partner enter without it.
- Starting an interior attack without two firefighters outside, unless life is in jeopardy and a rescue is needed.
- Losing voice or visual contact with your partner inside.
- Any action that compromises your safety or your team's (mandatory item in Pennsylvania's NFPA 1010 station).
