FirefightersRope inspection
With cleaning tools, cleaning supplies and an assignment, you clean and check a rope so it is maintained as the manufacturer or the department says, the maintenance is recorded and the rope is left ready or reported. It is station 4-20 of Ohio's Firefighter I practical exam (NFPA 1001 4.5.1).
Free to startThe steps
- Clean the rope following NFPA 1858 (2018 edition): remove dirt, debris and mud as possible; say you rinse it with water; say you soak it for 30 minutes in a plastic tub with a mild, non-detergent soap; say you rinse it twice with a hose washer if it was washed with soap; hang it to dry out of the sun.
- Inspect it by touch and by sight for wear, damage (soft spots and voids), deterioration and mildew.
- Record the rope inspection on the fire department form.
- No unsafe act during the evaluation.
To pass
- All 4 steps.
- The rope is a 20 to 50 ft (6 to 15 m) section, preferably an old one, and the inspection form is approved by the program, with the NFPA 1858 form as reference.
