FirefightersSearch and rescue: Rescue a firefighter whose respiratory protection is working (house, day)

Rescue a firefighter whose respiratory protection is working. The building is a house. It happens during the day. As one of a two-person search and rescue team, with your vision obscured, protective gear, a flashlight, forcible entry tools, hose lines and ladders when needed, you search a structure: every assigned area is searched, every victim is found and taken out, the team stays together and nobody's safety is put at risk. It is station 4-8 of Ohio's Firefighter I practical exam (NFPA 1001 4.3.9).

This scenario

  • Rescue a firefighter whose respiratory protection is working.
  • The building is a house.
  • It happens during the day.

The steps

  1. Check the door for heat before going in; assess whether the areas are tenable, check them for threats and recognize a safe haven.
  2. Place the ladders correctly, when used.
  3. Communicate and work as a team member with your vision obscured.
  4. Carry out one of the rescues in the scenarios above.
  5. Search every assigned area well.
  6. Find and remove every victim.
  7. Keep the team together.
  8. Do not put the team members' safety at risk, including their respiratory protection.
  9. No unsafe act during the evaluation.

To pass

  • All 8 steps without placing a ladder, or all 9 when placing one.
  • You work with a partner, and each one can fail alone for: losing situational awareness, wrong body posture, not identifying the building openings and features, not helping to remove the victim, or losing physical and verbal contact with the partner.
  • The area has several rooms, about 300 to 400 square feet (28 to 37 m²); the rescue dummy weighs at least 110 lb (50 kg); a ladder rescue is not required.
  • Only as an emergency, you may take the backpack partly or fully off to get through a restricted passage, without removing the face piece or compromising the air supply.
  • The evaluator can stop the station at any time for an unsafe act.
