FirefightersSecure building utilities (restaurant, day)

The building is a restaurant. It happens during the day. With tools and an assignment, you shut off a building's natural gas and electricity safely. It is station 4-11 of Ohio's Firefighter I practical exam (NFPA 1001 4.3.18).

Free to start

This scenario

  • The building is a restaurant.
  • It happens during the day.

The steps

  1. Identify the utility control devices.
  2. Assess the hazards.
  3. Operate the control valves and switches correctly.
  4. No unsafe act during the evaluation.

To pass

  • All 4 steps.
  • The assignment always includes both the natural gas and the electricity; both can be simulated without live utility connections.
  • For the electricity, operate the main switch and leave the individual breakers as you found them, to help find the cause of the fire; not doing it is not a critical failure.
  • The evaluator can stop the station at any time for an unsafe act.
