- First step when responding to a small, incipient stage fire?
- Sound the fire alarm and call the fire department, if appropriate.
- Second step, before approaching the fire?
- Identify a safe evacuation path; never let fire, heat or smoke come between you and it.
- Third step?
- Select the right type of fire extinguisher.
- Fourth step?
- Discharge the extinguisher within its effective range using the P.A.S.S. technique.
- What do you do after the fire is out?
- Back away, in case it flames up again.
- When must you evacuate immediately?
- If the extinguisher is empty and the fire is not out, or if the fire grows beyond the incipient stage.
- P in PASS?
- Pull the pin; this also breaks the tamper seal.
- A in PASS?
- Aim low, pointing the nozzle, horn or hose at the base of the fire.
- Which part of a CO2 extinguisher must you not touch?
- The plastic discharge horn: it gets very cold and may damage the skin.
- First S in PASS?
- Squeeze the handle to release the extinguishing agent.
- Second S in PASS?
- Sweep side to side at the base of the fire until it seems out, then watch the area; if it reignites, repeat aim, squeeze and sweep.
- What if you have the slightest doubt about fighting the fire?
- Evacuate immediately.
- Which fire is small enough for an extinguisher?
- One limited to the first material ignited, contained (like a wastebasket), with flames no higher than your head.
- Which fires must not be fought with an extinguisher?
- Fires with flammable solvents, over more than 60 square feet, hidden behind a wall or ceiling, or out of reach standing up.
- Which heat or smoke means leave now?
- Heat that makes it hard to get within 10-15 feet, having to crawl, or smoke quickly filling the room.
- Where must your escape path be while you fight a fire?
- Clear and behind you.
- What are the two jobs of a portable extinguisher?
- Control or put out small fires, and protect escape routes a fire could block.
- Which four elements must be present for fire to exist?
- Oxygen, heat, fuel and the chemical reaction.
- Which extinguisher for paper, cloth, wood, rubber and many plastics?
- One labeled A, such as water type; multi-purpose dry chemical works on A, B and C.
- On which fires must water never be used?
- Flammable liquid fires, which it can spread, and electrical fires, where it can cause electrocution.
