How fast may a robot move while it is being taught in manual mode?
At a reduced speed of 10 inches (250 mm) per second or less.
What is an enabling device?
A hand-operated device that allows motion only while it is held continuously.
On a 3-position enabling device, what stops the robot?
Letting go of it or squeezing it all the way.
How is the operator protected in automatic mode?
All safeguarding devices are active and the operator is never exposed to the hazards.
If maintenance must be done with power on inside the safeguarded space, what mode should the robot be in?
Manual mode, knowing some safeguards may not be active then.
Which OSHA rules control hazardous energy during robot maintenance?
29 CFR 1910.147 (Lockout/Tagout) or 29 CFR 1910.333.
Name the safeguarding devices OSHA lists for the restricted space.
Presence-sensing devices, fixed barrier or perimeter guards, and interlocked barrier guards.
What are awareness devices?
Chain or rope barriers on stanchions, flashing lights, signs, whistles and horns, used with other safeguards.
What is the restricted space of a robot?
The part of its maximum space that limiting devices confine it to.
What is muting?
Turning off a presence-sensing safeguarding device during part of the robot cycle.
What makes a robot application collaborative?
It is designed for direct interaction with workers.
What does speed and separation monitoring do?
It detects a worker, slows or stops the robot before contact, and resumes once the area is clear.
How does hand guiding work?
The robot moves only while the worker directs it and holds a hold-to-run control.
What is power and force limiting?
Contact with a worker is allowed only when forces and pressures stay low enough to cause no injury.
Which body regions must a power and force limited robot never touch?
The face, temples and throat.
What is a safety-rated monitored stop?
Power stays on but the robot is held in a monitored standstill; any movement in the space stops it at once.
How is an industrial mobile robot different from an industrial truck?
It navigates on its own and carries no seated or standing driver or passengers.
Who completes the robot risk assessment, and when?
The integrator documents it before commissioning and gives the results to the employer.
What is site acceptance testing?
A check that the robot works with the site's utilities and interfaces, done by the integrator and verified by the user before startup.
Who needs robot safety training, and when?
Anyone who assembles, installs, programs, integrates, operates, maintains or repairs robots, before the assignment.
