RoboticsOrderly shutdown of the robot

The robot is running and has to be serviced. Before anyone turns it off, you, the authorized employee, know what energy it uses and how to control it. Then you stop it with the shutdown procedure set for that robot, in an orderly way, so that stopping it does not create a new hazard. The stop button only stops the robot: isolating the energy is the next step.

Scenarios

  • The robot is running in its cell and needs servicing.
  • The robot is already stopped when you arrive to service it.

The steps

  1. Before turning the robot off, know the type and magnitude of the energy it uses, the hazards of that energy and the way to control it.
  2. Refer to the company's procedure for this robot to find that energy and the operating controls.
  3. If the robot is operating, shut it down by its normal stopping procedure, such as pressing the stop button, opening a switch or closing a valve.
  4. Shut it down in an orderly way, so the stop does not add or increase a hazard to the employees.
  5. Go on to isolate the energy: a push button or selector switch is not an energy isolating device.

Safety rules that stop the station

  • The robot is turned off or shut down only with the procedures established for it.
  • Push buttons, selector switches and other control circuit devices are not energy isolating devices: stopping with them is not a lockout.

To pass

  • The authorized employee knew the type and magnitude of the energy, its hazards and its control before the shutdown.
  • The robot was stopped with its own procedure and nobody was put at extra risk by the stop.
  • The written procedure has specific steps for shutting down, isolating, blocking and securing the robot.
