About the ECOS
Since the reform of the second cycle of medical studies (R2C), access to residency in France no longer depends on a single written exam: it combines the national written exams (EDN), the national ECOS (objective structured clinical examinations), which count for 30% of the grade, and the training path.
The national ECOS are held in the sixth year, under the supervision of the CNG (Centre national de gestion), by students who reached the required level in the EDN. Each station is a clinical scenario with an examiner and often a standardized patient. In 2024, 7,879 students took them.
