About the Kenntnisprüfung
The Kenntnisprüfung (knowledge test) is the exam for doctors whose training abroad is not recognized as equivalent and who apply for the German medical license (Approbation). It is set out in section 37 of the German medical licensing regulations (ÄApprO) and run by the authorities of each federal state.
It is an oral and practical exam with a patient presentation, on one day, of 60 to 90 minutes per candidate. It covers internal medicine and surgery, with questions on emergency medicine, clinical pharmacology, imaging and the law of medical practice. Communication with the patient is assessed too.
